<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first step in identifying what is a protein bar and what might be a granola bar is to look at the label. And this is what you should look for when looking at the nutrition label of your protein bars.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>As a general guideline, most protein bars contain 20-30 grams of protein per serving. Some may contain a little more protein or a little less. But this is the typical amount of protein most protein bars will contain. </strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The other macronutrients you&#8217;ll see in a protein bar are carbs and fats. I personally like to look for protein bars with at least 20g of protein or more per serving and a calorie content of around 200-240 calories.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you find that the bar you are looking at has little to no protein and most of the nutritional value comes from fats and carbs. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then, later on, you can rip these bad boys open and enjoy it wherever you are!</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Well, protein bars are just like these bars when it comes to convenience, but they contain better macronutrients if you have specific fitness goals you are after.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most people will use protein bars as a way to boost their protein intake throughout the day.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since protein is the macronutrient responsible for muscle growth, repair, and retention, plenty of fitness enthusiast use protein bars to help them with their protein intake goals.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>A good amount of protein in your protein bar should contain anywhere from 20-30 grams of protein per serving. </strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your bar can contain more or less, but this is the range I would personally shoot for. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Looking At Fats And Carbs</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The other macronutrients you&#8217;ll find in bars are fats and carbs. These are what essentials will make your protein bars taste good. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is nothing wrong with fats and carbs. And good protein bars usually do a good job of having a good balance of fats, carbs, and proteins in their bars.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What you look for here will depend on your goals and if you have any diet requirements. For example, if you are on the keto diet. You&#8217;ll look for bars with low to zero carbs, mostly fats and protein.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the protein bars vs protein shakes debate. A protein bar tends to be more filling and can keep you satiated longer than your typical protein shake. (satiated is a fancy word for keeping you full longer.)</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Protein shakes are usually just water with powder added. But a protein bar can contain real whole foods like dried fruit, nuts, or granola.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But first, let&#8217;s talk about the dreaded question. <strong>Why are protein bars so expensive?</strong></p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ingredients</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ingredients play a big role in why the cost of protein bars can get so expensive. This is especially true if the brand of protein bar you decide to purchase uses high-quality ingredients.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most expensive protein bars are usually made with real ingredients. They tend to command more money since they are using high-quality protein sources in their bars.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And protein bars with lower-quality ingredients can get away with charging less since it costs them less to make the protein bars.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In either case. There is still a cost and expense when it comes to making the protein bars. And this is yet another cost that will get passed down to the consumer.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now that the ingredients are bought, the bars are made, and the protein bar company needs to pay for advertising to get their protein bars known. They may make deals with your local grocery stores to stock the shelves with their product.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They might sponsor a few fitness enthusiasts, influencers, or athletes to get their product out into the fitness world.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;ve hinted at this earlier in my blog post. But instead of buying single protein bars whenever you walk down your store shelves or at your local gas station.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But them in bulk instead. Try to order them in bulk and directly from the company.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yeah, it&#8217;ll be more expensive upfront. But in the long run. This will allow you to save money on how much each bar costs.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ditch The Name Brands</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some big-name brands of protein bars are very expensive compared to generic brands of protein bars. And a part of that cost is because of the brand.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are a bunch of reasons why this is the case. Maybe they can&#8217;t afford to buy ingredients in bulk and have to spend more. Perhaps their marketing costs are higher. Or maybe the CEO of the company wants a new Ferrari.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Costco protein bars are probably one of the most affordable protein bars out there on the market. Honestly, so many people are sleeping on this protein bar.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>They also have pretty good macros at around 21g per bar at 190 calories.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And when you buy in bulk. Each bar comes out to roughly $1 and some change.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That&#8217;s not bad at all, in my opinion, especially when protein bars cost upwards of $3-$5 a bar.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I personally like to look for a protein bar that&#8217;s high in protein, usually around 20g. And something that&#8217;s around 200 calories. This gives me a well-balanced protein bar of fats and carbs and is loaded with a good amount of protein.</p>

<li><strong>Help with hitting their protein goals.</strong> It can be used as healthy snacks to help you hit your protein intake while you are on a cut trying to burn off fat or in a bulk trying to build muscle mass.</li>



<li><strong>For convenience:</strong> Eating protein bars is a convenient source of protein and other nutrients.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Protein bars are so versatile you can use them on a cut or bulk.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But if you are not exercising and you are not counting your calories.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Making Sure Your Protein Bars Are Not Just A Candy Bar</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not all protein bars are created equal. Check out the nutrition facts label and look at the macros. You want something high in protein while being low in sugar and fats.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some bars are just candy bars but with more protein. Then, they are marketed like protein bars because of the extra protein these bars contain.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Please keep this in mind and be on the lookout for it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here&#8217;s a quick story as to why I bring this up&#8230;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I had a friend who was trying to lose weight on his own. He wasn&#8217;t tracking calories or anything like that. He decided to move around and eat better. (I told him that not tracking was his first mistake.)</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He was doing well with his progress the first few months.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then, he wanted to get a bit more severe and watched a YouTube video that inspired him to increase his protein intake.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He thought a protein bar would be the perfect post-workout snack. (I mean, he is not wrong.)</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He went to the local snack aisle and looked through it. He found one protein bar he thought would taste good and purchased it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He liked it so much that he decided to buy a box of them from Costco. A few months later, he started having trouble losing weight.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He reached out to me, and I saw what he was eating. It was one of the bars marketed as a meal-replacement protein bar.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It was a candy bar with a little protein added.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I tell you this story to avoid the same mistake.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;re eating protein bars and not working out, ensure you&#8217;re at least tracking your calories and choosing protein bars with a good amount of protein while being low in fats and sugars.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">My Favorite Protein Bar To Eat Even When I&#8217;m Not Exercising</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I personally look for protein bars that are around 200 calories. Also, I&#8217;m looking for something where most of the bar&#8217;s calories are protein.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is personally what I like to look for in protein bars. Many protein bars meet what I look for in a bar.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But the best tasting in my experience has to be these bars here: <em><u>I&#8217;ll link to the article on my favorite bars once it is published.</u></em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nope, not at all. Many protein bars have become my only post-workout snack over the years.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, I am still getting real food later on throughout the day.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But eating a bar to hold you over for your real food is fine.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Suppose you are thinking about eating traditional junk snacks like chips or candy bars. Then, most protein bars may be the better option for you and your diet.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Protein bars can be healthier than traditional snacks like potato chips, snicker bars, Twix, gummy worms, etc. They contain better macronutrients than these snacks; some bars even contain dietary fiber.</strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Will I Gain Weight If I Eat A Protein Bar Everyday</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;ve gone through a lot of protein bars over my lifetime. And I can assure you.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Eating protein bars every day will not make you gain weight in itself. Gaining weight is due to eating a surplus of calories over your maintenance amount. That is the actual cause of weight gain, and it is not from the protein bar itself.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can use protein bars to lose weight, but you can also use it to gain weight. Protein bars itself is not the thing responsible for your weight gain.</p>
