Suppose you are an avid gym goer and enjoy cups of coffee. You’ve probably wondered if you can add the two ingredients together.
Adding protein directly into a very hot cup of coffee will result in the protein powder not mixing well and forming a clumpy mess in your drink if you want to add protein powder to your coffee. You will need to do so using a different strategy than mixing the two directly together.
The good news is, yes, you can add protein to your coffee. You get to enjoy the benefits of a protein shake and the benefits of coffee when you do this. Also, this idea has become very popular through social media like TikTok and Instagram.
But there are a few steps you need to take in order to be able to mix the two. Down below, I’ll go over what you need to do in order to enjoy protein powder and coffee together.
Can You Add Protein Powder To Coffee
Protein powder has so many uses. You can drink it plain, you can cook with it, and you can make smoothies out of it, too. And…
You can add protein powder to your coffee (If done correctly) to help boost your protein intake of the day, use protein powder as a healthier coffee creamer substitute, and enhance the flavors of your coffee with the flavor of your protein powder.
This is a great way to get the muscle-building benefits of your protein powder. As well as the energy and focus of a cup of coffee together. And if you are trying to lose weight.
Protein is a great way to help you retain your muscle mass while on a cut, and pairing it with coffee can help curb your appetite at the same time.
And I believe this is why adding protein powder to coffee has become so popular over social media. But remember, the thing you need to be careful about is mixing the two directly.
Below, I’ll talk about the three ways you can enjoy protein powder and coffee successfully together.
How Do I Add Protein Powder To Hot Drinks
Adding protein powder to very hot liquids can be a challenge, so much so that I’ve created two different articles on the topic.
Here’s one on mixing protein powder with hot water.
And another about can you add protein powder to tea?
Be sure to check out those posts to learn how to enjoy protein with those drinks as well!
But we are here to talk about coffee and protein powders and how to mix the two successfully
So Let’s dive into the 3 different ways you can enjoy them together
1st Way
The first way to add these two ingredients together is by creating two separate drinks in separate containers and then slowly combining the two together.
First, go ahead and make your coffee and set that to the side.
Next, you want to create a protein slush solution by adding your protein powder with milk or water in a separate container and mixing these two thoroughly. You can use milk here to make a “protein creamer” alternative for your coffee.
Next, gradually add your coffee to this protein slush solution and mix the entire time.
The hotter the coffee. The more it will have a tendency to react to the protein powder and create clumps.
So be sure to play around with temperature to get the perfect mix.
2nd Way
This second strategy has a better success rate. Here, what you are going to do is brew your cup of coffee. Then chill or wait till your coffee gets to room temperature.
Now, you should easily be able to mix your protein powder with your coffee together. (you can add creamer to it if you want.) Now, instead of heating up this drink. I suggest enjoying your coffee iced.
3rd Way
This last solution is by far the most convenient and easiest solution instead of making your own concoction. You can always buy a coffee protein powder.
There are many companies that sell protein coffee. It’s protein powder with the flavor of coffee. Some also have the caffeine content in their product as well.
So you can enjoy all the benefits of protein and coffee in one product without the hassle of trying to mix two separate ingredients.

Benefits Of Adding Protein Powder Into Your Cup Of Coffee
I personally like the idea of adding protein powder to your coffee. Especially if you are a gym rat who loves caffeine like I am.
But instead of trying to mix the two separately, I prefer to go with regular protein powder and pre-workout.
Or if I’m not working out that day but feel like I need a little boost in energy. I like to use the protein coffee I talked about earlier since it is way more convenient than mixing hot coffee with protein powder.
And you get the same added benefits, which I’ll talk about below:
Increased Protein Intake
Whether on a cut or a bulk, protein powder can help you grow your muscles in a bulk or retain your muscle mass while on a cut.
Energy And Focus
The caffeine in coffee helps you stay focused and alert. Just as long as you don’t go too crazy with the caffeine you consume.
Also, keep in mind the time of day. It’s not a great idea to be taking caffeine close to your bedtime. (Don’t say I didn’t warn you!)
Help Stay Satiated
Protein is the most satiating macro out of carbs and fats. And coffee (more specifically, the caffeine in coffee) has been known to help curb appetite and hunger and raise metabolism.
These are great benefits, especially when you have fitness goals you are trying to hit.
Can You Use Protein Powder As A Coffee Creamer
This is great if you are looking for a healthier alternative to coffee creamers and want to sneak in some extra grams of protein in your diet.
Protein powder can be used as a healthy coffee creamer alternative. First, mix the protein powder with milk. Then, slowly add this mix to your coffee. Just make sure not to have your coffee too hot, or the protein powder might start to get lumpy.
Just make sure you use a protein powder flavor that will pair well with coffee.
Final Thoughts About Can You Add Protein Powder To Coffee
That concludes this blog post, and by now, you should know that adding protein powder to your coffee can be done.
You will have to be careful when trying to mix the two together because hot liquids and most protein powders do not get along very well. And you will have trouble directly mixing the two together.
Try one of the two methods I listed above to have a better chance of mixing the two together.
And if you do not want to deal with all the hassle. Then I recommend going with a protein coffee, which gives you all the benefits without all the hassle.
